The Four R’s
To conceptualize how Goodness Village supports our neighbors in creating a Fresh Start, a neighbor’s transition out of chronic homelessness can be broken down into four stages:
Rest, Rapport, Recover, and Restore
-
It takes time to transition from living in a tent or car to being part of a community like Goodness Village. During a neighbor’s rest phase, we expect them to be spending a lot of time in their home, getting used to this new normal. On average, we anticipate it taking one month of Rest for every year a neighbor’s been unhoused.
-
Building trust between Goodness Village staff and neighbors is key to building a healthy community. This is a two way street, where our neighbors get to know our staff and program, and the staff get to know a neighbor’s personality and history. This stage is focused on listening and understanding, building a healthy respect within the Village.
-
Recovery is where a lot of the heavy lifting happens. Whether it’s meeting with our Recovery Coach or volunteer nurses, using our Support Staff to connect with external resources, the Recover stage is where our neighbors take a look at why they became unhoused and take steps to prevent the cycle of chronic homelessness.
-
During the Restore phase, we celebrate and support our neighbors as they thrive. Here is where we witness neighbors become who they have always meant to be. Whether this means moving out into their own apartment, applying for that job they’ve always dreamed of, or celebrating sobriety surrounded by neighbors and friends; seeing our neighbors thrive is why Goodness Village exists!
